John McGowan appointed Civida Board Chair, Effective January 1, 2024 


January 2, 2024 (Edmonton, Alberta) The Civida Board of Directors are pleased to announce John McGowan as the new Chair of the Board, effective January 1, 2024. 

“John has been an integral part of Civida’s Board for the past three years, most recently serving as Vice Chair. He has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a profound understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the affordable housing sector. It has been an honor to serve as the Civida Board Chair, and I am delighted to pass the torch to someone as capable as John McGowan. His strategic insights and diligence in serving Edmontonians align seamlessly with Civida’s values. 

Karen Stone, outgoing Chair 

John, who most recently served as Civida Board Vice Chair, is currently CEO of his consulting firm, McGowan & Associates. Prior to his retirement at the beginning of 2016, he was a County Manager, a senior executive, and then Deputy Minister at Alberta Municipal Affairs, and finally the CEO for the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association. John is a CPA with an ICD.D, skilled in executive management and governance, strengthening organizational purpose and building strategic alliances. John currently serves as the Chair of the Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation.
