Civida officially opens 120 new affordable homes in Lendrum

March 14, 2024 (Edmonton, Alberta)

Civida, with the support of the City of Edmonton, Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada, is pleased to announce the official opening of the new Civida Lendrum redevelopment, a significant housing project that has added 120 new affordable homes to the city.

A ceremony to mark the official opening of the new complex was held today, March 14, with remarks from the Honourable Randy Boissonnault, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre and federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities; alongside Jason Nixon, Alberta Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services; City of Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, and Michael Janz, Ward papastew Councillor.

The Civida Lendrum redevelopment replaced two aging community (social) housing apartment buildings built in the early 1960s, more than doubling the site’s original capacity. The new complex houses over 300 residents, offering one to four-bedroom units, including 11 four-bedroom walk-out townhomes and 12 barrier-free, accessible suites. Building features include in-suite laundry, underground parking, and bicycle storage, access to shared amenities, and an on-site commercial space to open later this year. The development is within close walking distance, and offers public pedestrian access, to the Fort Edmonton Park/South Campus LRT Station and Saville Sports Centre. Construction was completed in October 2023, and is fully leased.

Funding for this project included $14.9 million of federal and provincial government funding through the Canada-Alberta Bilateral Agreement under the National Housing Strategy, and a $3.9 million contribution from the City of Edmonton. Civida invested $27.6 million through equity and financing.

“The Government of Canada is committed to improving the quality of life for Canadians, particularly our most vulnerable, by working closely with our provincial partners to create more affordable housing. Today’s announcement will not only provide safe and affordable homes for families in need but will also help strengthen the city of Edmonton by creating an inclusive community for these residents to grow and thrive in. This is just one way that we are delivering meaningful results through our National Housing Strategy.”

– Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities

“A safe and affordable place to call home is essential to all Edmontonians. Today’s grand opening of Civida Lendrum is an example of different levels of government and housing partners working together to address housing demand in Edmonton and in Canada. By investing in the redevelopment of projects such as this, our government is ensuring that everyone in Canada has a home within their community that they can afford and meets their needs.”

– Randy Boissonnault, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, Alberta and Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages

“This project highlights our meaningful progress in increasing our affordable housing supply in Edmonton. These units will house hundreds of Edmontonians and have a meaningful impact on affordable housing in the community. We are constantly looking for opportunities to grow our affordable housing and support projects that meet community needs.”

– Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services

“When Council declared a housing and houselessness emergency, we called on all levels of government to come together and collaborate to address the scale of this issue. This project is a great example of what we can build when we work together. I am proud that the City of Edmonton did our part by providing Civida $3.9 million to purchase these properties. With 120 affordable units, this mixed-income redevelopment is a facility that will serve our city for generations to come. ”

– Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, City of Edmonton

“Today’s unveiling of Civida’s newest development, Lendrum, is a testament to the collective commitment to providing affordable housing. In partnership with the City of Edmonton, the Government of Alberta, and the Government of Canada we are grateful and proud to be able to provide 120 new affordable homes for Edmonton families and individuals, today, and for decades to come. Home to over 300 people, this collaborative project stands as a symbol of significant progress towards our ongoing mission to provide safe and affordable housing for all in need, and promoting the creation of more inclusive, thriving communities.”

– Gord Johnston, Civida Chief Executive Officer
